Bluesocket announces the release of the world’s first commercially available Virtual Wireless LAN: the Bluesocket vWLAN™.

vWLAN™ offers customers Bluesocket’s “3S” Competitive Advantage: Security, Scalability, and Sustainability.

Burlington, Mass. – October 27, 2009 – Bluesocket, Inc., (www.bluesocket.com), announces the commercial release of the industry’s next generation wireless LAN, Virtual WLAN (vWLAN™). The design and engineering behind the new vWLAN offers customers Bluesocket’s “3S” Competitive Advantage: Security, Scalability, and Sustainability. vWLAN was designed to deliver enhanced performance and dramatically improved scalability, while continuing to provide the state-of-the-art wireless security for which Bluesocket is known.

The vWLAN architecture leverages existing network infrastructures to produce a fully integrated and optimized wireless solution enabling customers to dramatically reduce the cost of deploying and operating large-scale Wi-Fi networks while significantly improving performance. The vWLAN also still delivers robust security using differentiated granular role-based policy enforcement and integrated network access control.

vWLAN is the only solution on the market which pushes all data traffic “to the edge,” while maintaining centralized control of the network. Security and mobility functions are performed by “smart” 802.11n APs, significantly improving support for bandwidth intensive applications. This innovative approach provides customers with a richer set of centralized control applications. In addition, it makes vWLAN the industry leader in scalability. Bluesocket’s strategy to move toward a fully virtualized wireless LAN controller will give customers the flexibility to run vWLAN on a variety of server, blade, and hypervisor platforms.

“Wired and wireless infrastructure solutions are only differentiated by the communication technology at the edge of the network. As the access layer technologies continue to become confluent, enterprises only need one set of policies and tools for security, access and management regardless of the physical infrastructure,“ says Tim Zimmerman of Gartner.

vWLAN architecture converges wired and wireless networks to eliminate redundant components of traditional overlay solutions resulting in a lower cost and higher performance WLAN solution.

Bluesocket’s vWLAN energy efficient configuration reduces customers’ carbon emissions in two ways. First, vWLAN reduces hardware requirements up to 80%, thereby eliminating the energy required to produce, ship, store, maintain and dispose of that hardware. Second, fewer controllers and APs reduce the amount of electricity required to operate the vWLAN. Since electricity generation is one of the largest producers of CO2, the vWLAN can be a strong contributor to a company’s sustainability initiatives with the reduction of a company’s CO2 footprint.

“Bluesocket has a heritage of being an industry leader in secure wireless LAN. Our vWLAN next generation architecture continues this heritage while also delivering massive scalability, edge-based switching, ease of maintenance, and a significant reduction in energy consumption supporting lower total cost of ownership,” says Mads Lillelund, CEO of Bluesocket. “We have achieved our goal of significantly improving overall performance while continuing to provide highly reliable wireless security, for which we have always been known.”

Key elements of the Bluesocket vWLAN architecture include:
  • State-of-the-art controller software provides intelligent mobility coordination in a distributed system delivering seamless roaming with fast hand-off for high band width applications such as voice and video.
  • Tightly integrated security modules offer robust and scalable NAC, Guest Access, AAA and WIDS capability.
  • Seamless High Availability that eliminates disruption to end users if a failover occurs.
  • Identity-based QoS and Fairness Algorithms that are applied at the access point.
  • Green IT Design that delivers a reduced carbon footprint with up to 80% less hardware and significant ongoing savings on energy consumption.

“We knew we needed a solution that would provide significant scalability and performance and Bluesocket’s vWLAN architecture is ideally suited to meet our needs,” says Mark Hunter, Network Engineer at Forney Independent School District. “At the client level, our teachers are focused on delivering the highest quality education to our students and don’t have the time or resources to deal with connectivity issues or slow network performance. The Bluesocket solution is a great fit with simple licensing, massive scalability and robust performance.”

“Bluesocket’s vWLAN solution, which includes its award winning 802.11n access points, represents the best overall solution in the market. vWLAN allows customers to seamlessly unify their network infrastructure to achieve a scalable, high-performance mobility solution with comprehensive security that delivers both immediate and ongoing cost savings, ” says Patrick Foy, Bluesocket’s Head of Engineering. “These savings are realized through the reduction in Wi-Fi controllers, associated maintenance and energy costs.”
